What I'm Watching

Written 11/10/2024
I'm only toward the end of the first of three seasons as of the time of this writing, but omg this is such an excellent show! I think it was around March 2024 I got offered a special for six months of MGM+ for something ridiculous like $34. Even though I had seen it in the theater, the Bob Marley movie One Love was on its way to MGM+, but more importantly so was another movie that I didn't see in the theater that I wanted to, called American Fiction starring my boy I didn't discover until the first Samuel L Jackson Shaft Remake, Jeffrey Wright (still can't believe that's Peoples Hernandez from Shaft smh)

So, I watched One Love again and then watched American Fiction (great movie). Then, I just basically let my six-month subscription run out without watching anything else on the streaming service. It wasn't my plan. I just had other things I was watching like the NBA playoffs, then the start of the WNBA and Ice Cube's Big3 League. I'd seen From on the streaming service and noted that it starred another one of my boys I'm a fan of going all the way back to the first thing I saw him in, as Mercutio in a modern telling of Romeo & Juliet in '96, as well as the Best Man series; Harold Perrineau. But see the line above the last one, so it didn't interest me enough to even see what it was about

Then with less than a week left on my subscription, they started advertising the new season of From. When I saw trailers for it, I saw that the premise was basically about a town of people trapped in this town where monsters come out at night. As someone who unexpectedly became a big fan of The Walking Dead after receiving countless recommendations for it over the years prior, this was right up my alley. So with about three days left on my subscription, I decided to check out the first episode to see if it grabbed me

I. Got. Hooked! It reminds me of the reasons I fell in love with Walking Dead. Yes, technically the Walking Dead is a show about zombies. But when you sit down and watch the show, you realize it's not really about the zombies at all, but more about the survivors and the relationships they build/lose while having to adjust to their new reality. Where TWD was so good in that it really focused on the humanity of its zombie show, From does exactly the same thing, only changing the main antagonists from zombies to monsters. And this ain't Sully from Monsters Inc or Casper lurking in that town. MGM puts some money into their monsters to make the unbelievable terrifyingly believable. You've got all kinds of personalities that have to make adjustments, and you find that some people can adjust better than others, which creates a whole different level of threat. Oh, AND it's completely uncensored, which is how I love my shows. I'm talking full F bombs and the whole nine. As I was binge watching yesterday, I couldn't help but think how ironically funny this show is in the midst of all the crazy shit (Jade is fucking hilarious!). When Perrineau told one of the other characters "would you shut the fuck up", I would love to say I didn't scream with laughter in the middle of my home
So I extended my MGM+ subscription on a month-to-month basis until I finish all the episodes. I highly recommend this show for anyone, but especially to big fans of the first like six seasons of the Walking Dead

I don't know y'all, I think From might be a little better than TWD
What I Plan to Watch Soon
12/14/2024
So here's what happened. Ya know, while I'm living my own truth, I won't lie and say that it has been easy. I've spent some very lonely nights wondering why no one on this planet loves or even understands me (hell, I'da settled for that). I got some help in treatment and after care, but this is still a very shitty deal I've gotten so far here on this planet

To the point where probably for the last year or so, I've gotten addicted to retail therapy shopping in a digital online store for movies and tv shows. I also a couple of years ago had a major change in my financial situation, so I wasn't able to maintain all the streaming services I previously had. I would mostly initially just buy the movie and shows I really wanted, no matter the cost. But they often have GREAT deals on movies and tv shows in the store I shop in the most. And I really loved when they were on sale, because you would pay a low price once and you own the complete series forever. The more tv shows and movies I own, the less I have a need for streaming services

One of the first things I bought because I didn't finish watching the last two seasons of the series, after it got me hooked again around season eight, was the entire Walking Dead series. Then there was another show I loved when it was on, but also didn't watch it's final three or four seasons, a show called Supernatural that I bought the whole series. The Walking Dead had like a total of 10 or 11 seasons. Supernatural had something like 15 seasons. So these two shows were the ONLY shows that I paid full price for, which was $100 each. Supernatural is on Netflix but Netflix was one that didn't survive the great streaming chopping block when my finances changed. I signed up for AMC+ for I think $8 a month to watch The Walking Dead, only to discover that at least at that time and for reasons unknown, TWD wasn't available on the service smh. Buying both of these series alleviated my need to watch them on their respective services

Then I started reading an audible book (I LOVE Audible and have quite the collection I haven't gotten to yet) on one of my favorite tv shows, The Big Bang Theory. This one is available on Paramount+, which also didn't survive the chopping block. But I only binged that show once on the Netflix DVD service, on the two discs at a time plan too. Shit took me forever. At that time, they were making new episodes, so after I caught up on the Netflix DVD's, I would DVR the new episodes and watch them. But I only watched all episodes once. Because of this, I found it difficult to follow along with some of the references in the book to specific episodes. Plus, all this behind-the-scenes stuff was just making me want to watch it again. So, guess the next series I bought. Its regular price was also $100, but it was on sale for $80 so I pulled the trigger

All of this basically opened the flood gates. I've bought countless movies because they were only $5, and I even have several tv series I own the whole series but have never watched it. I bought Fear the Walking Dead despite never having seen it after I bought TWD, because it was only $25. Less than a month ago from the time of this writing, I bought the first 20 seasons of the original NCIS. I've never seen a single episode of that show, but the 20-season set was on sale for $16.99. If I've never seen a show and it's a great deal, I look online to see if the show was considered any good. All of the series I've bought that I haven't watched (or that wasn't a spinoff of another show I liked, like Fear the Walking Dead) have been shows that are highly reviewed

In that regard, I also own but have never watched the complete series of: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Mad Men, the original Mission Impossible series from the 60's, Monk, How I Met Your Mother, Parks and Recreation, Power, one of the complete series animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (hey those cartoons were really good and highly rated), the first and only season so far of Poppa's House to support Geoffrey Owens (and I also think Damon Wayans is hilarious; I got my eyes on My Wife and Kids for a great price next, and I didn't even know at first one of my early crushes that never went away, Essence Atkins is in it too), and the first and only season of the Rick and Michonne (aka Okoye from Black Panther) TWD spinoff called The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, leaving the only TWD spinoff series I don't yet own as Daryl's and Carol's (oh shit, just noticed their names rhyme, those characters were destined to be connected) series called Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol. All of these series listed above were $20 or less (except I think How I Met Your Mother was $30, but the regular price is $80 so it was still a good deal). Update: 5/30/2025 - So, while I've definitely dialed it back mostly because I already own most of the shit I wanted, I still have remnants of this retail therapy, where I'm too deep in them deal streets to turn away now. I've got more titles in these categories, so allow me to express on my website just how fucking bad this shit has gotten for me. Added series I own but haven't watched not included above: Atlanta, (ok, before I reveal the next one, I feel like there's about to be a whole buncha fucking judgment! But I don't even care. First of all, it was only $10 for the entire series. Second, I remember when I was like 7 years old, I actually used to wake up early on Saturday mornings, which went against my religion to do when I was a kid, to watch this show because it used to come on at like 6 in the morning. When I saw it available, I started cracking up, thinking I HAD to get it, and that was before I saw that it was $10. But I haven't watched it since I was a kid) Pee-Wee's PlayHouse, Suits, Veronica Mars (it was also $10 for the series and is very highly reviewed), Watchmen (also very highly reviewed and I had been wanting to check it out, but it hadn't gone on sale until it finally did), Snowpiercer (Oh this was a very pleasant surprise. I first watched the movie, then I had started watching this tv show years ago on Netflix, I think. But then it got removed and wasn't available for sale in the store or anywhere. Then they brought the show back on AMC+ (I believe) and made two new seasons, at which the only way to see the old and new episodes was to subscribe to AMC+. I think I started off subscribing to watch the show and started it over. But then something happened where I couldn't finish it again. One day I was perusing my store and saw it in the new releases and for $20. I couldn't buy this shit fast enough. Now I own it so I can watch the old episodes and new alike

I also bought several tv series that I had watched before but liked them and wouldn't mind watching them again. Especially because they too were only $20 or less. These titles include Family Matters, Frasier, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Home Improvement, Lincoln Heights (one of my all-time favorite dramas, especially the first two seasons, and it introduced the world to Erica Hubbard....heeeeey Erica), Married with Children (one of my all-time favorite sitcoms), Martin (my all-time favorite), Saved by the Bell, and this show I really loved that ended after only two or three seasons called SouthLAnd (EXCELLENT SHOW, I was so pissed when it was cancelled)

Update 5/30/2025 - And since then: Alf (it was only $10 for the entire series as its introduction to home streaming, this was another classic from my childhood), Golden Girls (this is one of my all-time favorite sitcoms, actually. I don't even give a damn I'm not its target demographic; this show was fucking hilarious! I'd checked my store for it just a couple of weeks prior, and it was only available to purchase by seasons individually, and the first season was $15, with the subsequent six seasons being $20 each, for a grand total of $135. I love the show, but not that damn much. Then one day I decided to peruse the store for deals that interests me, and they had a big ass picture of the GG cover with text below it stating each season was $5. I opened that shit with the quickness, and sure enough, that was the price for each of the seven seasons. Those MF knocked $100 off the total set. Do you see why I still have this fucking issue?)

I do have some other shows that I still want but it's not a lot at this point. But they always have such great deals that my eyes are always open. They have a daily deal during the holidays in the digital store I use, and a couple of days ago they had the entire series of Game of Thrones (normally $100) for $39. I didn't get it tho; I'm not interested in GoT at any price. Just last night I did buy their deal of the day, that was four of the five Hunger Games movies (not including the new one, Singin' Ass Rattlesnakes and Potions or some shit) for a grand total of $7.99. Today's deal I also wasn't interested in, but it was still good. It was 10 Star Trek (digital) movies for $20

Most recently, the show I had my eye on was The Office. I've binged it twice back when I had a Peacock script, but I don't have that subscription anymore either. I love the series and wouldn't mind owning it. It was also NEVER on sale! So, I stubbornly refused to pull the trigger. It was always listed in the top selling shows despite it always being listed at $100. Shows would go on sale all the time, sometimes three or four times over, while The Office stood pat. As I said, I've watched it twice and I had so much shit that I haven't even watched yet, I decided to be patient with The Office. But I would check regularly, almost daily. I would always expect it to not be on sale, but I would check anyway just to be thorough. Until about a week ago, as I was perusing the store's "limited time prices" section, they had a big ass picture of one of the The Office covers, the one with Steve Carrell awkwardly looking right at us
Beneath the pic it said $69.99. BIIIIITCH!!! I couldn't buy that shit fast enough. So now I own The Office too. What was crazy about that was two things. One, the very next day, the Office had been removed from that section of the site, meaning it wasn't on sale anymore. Also, whenever a show goes on sale (especially at a deeply discounted price or a shallow ass discount for extremely popular series' such as this one), many people will buy it, and it will catapult to the front of the Top TV section. That's how I always know what's on sale before I get to that part of the store. Well, the Office didn't do that. In fact, I actually wondered if I was just high and didn't really see it on sale. Fortunately though, they sent me an email receipt showing that I only paid $70 for it. It was almost as if it was put on sale exclusively for me

Now that I have the Office, I really don't need much else. But since I have The Big Bang Theory, I do want its spinoff show, Young Sheldon, that I've also never watched. Laurie Metcalf, aka Jackie on Roseanne and the Conners (two more shows I have my eye on in the store, btw. Roseanne is in my top five to seven favorite sitcoms of all-time), played Sheldon's mother on Big Bang Theory. And I see that Laurie's real-life daughter plays her character in Young Sheldon. But because it's a new show that just ended earlier this year, Young Sheldon is $120 on the store where I shop. They had it on sale for like $79 recently, but that's still not in my price range for that show. The only shows I've spent close to that amount on are shows I already know I love. Bitch I don't know you! No, that was your parent show I got into. You haven't proven a damn thing to me yet, and for those shows, I need you to be closer to $20 for me to pull the trigger. There's a science to this shit

Now, with all of that being said, I don't actually even plan on writing about any of these tv shows, because it would take too long. I said all of this to express how my addiction started, and that led to my addiction spreading to their movie box sets on sale at very reasonable prices. You can get an entire trilogy for $13 - $15, or a four-movie set (or sometimes more) for $20 - $25. I remember buying all four Lethal Weapon movies for $20. All five Die Hard movies cost me about that same amount

In my retail therapy, I also bought quite a few box sets that I have yet to watch. In addition to the movies I've seen and loved, these movies I will write about on here too. If there are a few movies in the set, I may only watch the first one (or maybe two) before writing about it. There may also be others I bought in a bigger set, like I got something like 25 MGM movies in a set for like $25. Yeah, I'm not including all of those movies. I got another like twelve Clint Eastwood movies for $9.99 (oh I find them mf deals). Yeah, I'm not including those either. These are just movies that interest me enough to write about them

Ok, so here's the list of movies I own but have not watched as of yet

The Alien Films
Box set included all except the newest movie, Alien: Romulus, that came out this year for $10

The Anchorman Movies
Also $10 for the set. I don't find Will Ferrell funny, so we'll see if this one surprises me

Because it was $5, and although I don't yet own it, I plan to buy and watch the second one when I can get it for that same price

I really enjoyed the Netflix movie The Harder They Fall. This is by the same writer and director, and stars one of my favorite actors who was also in Harder They Fall, LaKeith Stansfield

Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky, and the 2019 Child's Play remake
I love the original Child's Play movies and got all of them in a set for like $10. I've seen the first three and Bride of Chucky, but I've never seen these four

Escape Plan 2: Hades and Escape Plan 3: The Extractors
This was another one of those I got the trilogy for like $10. I've watched the first one but still haven't watched the two sequels. The first one had the governator and was actually pretty good

It's not until I write this shit that I really realize how bad my retail therapy got. But I got this Bruce Lee movie in a five-film box set of his for another $10. That set included Fist of Fury, this film, The Big Boss, The Way of the Dragon, and Bruce Lee: The Legend, which is a documentary. I haven't watched that yet either, but I don't consider it a movie. I had not seen any of his movies before. I also bought Enter the Dragon because it of course wasn't included (should have been in place of that damn documentary imo), because ETD by itself was about three dollars more than the cost of the whole five movie set, as that is widely considered his best film. And with that purchase, I pretty much have all of his movies. I've watched and thoroughly enjoyed all of the others (The Big Boss is my favorite) but haven't watched this one because this is the one he was filming when he died, so his actual images were only in it for something like 17 minutes, or so I read. I'm not really in a rush to get to this one

Ghostbusters (2016 Ladies Remake)
One of the streaming services I had earlier this year had the remake Ghostbusters: Afterlife on it. I hadn't even heard of it. I did like the original two movies, and saw this one starred Paul Rudd, from Ant-Man fame, and featured the three remaining original old farts, so I checked it out. And to my surprise it was really good! The new one, Frozen Empire, was coming out soon and it looked really good too. While I didn't like that one as much as I hoped I would, they had all five of the Ghostbusters movies in a bundle on sale for $20. This remake is the only one I haven't seen yet, but I will soon

The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III
I know I know, the fuck?! I have seen the first one. But I have yet to watch the other two, even though I bought this trilogy for $15

All like 43 of the Saw movies
I may have seen the first one back in the day, as my ex-wife was a huge Saw fan. But if I did, I don't remember it and I definitely never saw any others. That didn't stop me from buying the whole bundle for $10, including one starring Chris Rock that I have to watch to believe. Oh shit, and in pulling up the movie now, I didn't even initially notice that it stars Samuel L Jackson too. Definitely gotta get to this one

The Kingsman Trilogy minus one
This is one of those things that happens with streaming services that I can't stand. To me, if you're a streaming service and you're going to be paying to have a movie on your service, if there is more than one movie in the set why the fuck would they not get all of the movies? I don't remember which streaming service I had at the time, but it only had one of these films - Kingsman: The Secret Service - available to watch. Samuel L Jackson played the main villain with a hilariously unnecessary speech impediment, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't know until I looked up more information on the movie after I watched it, as I tend to do after I watch a movie for the first time, that this was just the first movie of a three-film set. I've never seen The King's Man, or Kingsman: The Golden Circle, but bought the trilogy when it was on sale for $15

Same thing with this one, although this one wasn't quite the same as the last scenario, because this movie didn't exist yet when I finally got into the series. But the streaming service only had I think the first two of the three movies available at that time. So, to watch the third one, I bought the set of three for something like $15. I skipped this one in the theater due to one word; prolly a whole buncha MF kids. Oh that's more than on- my bad. Then when it became available to own a few months later, I bought it like the second week it was out when it went on sale for $13, but still have yet to watch it

All like 36 of the Sharknado movies
I don't remember how many there are in that long ass series, but I know the whole set was only $10. And I had heard so much about it. I did watch the first one. I found it mostly funny, although I don't think I was supposed to. I'll watch probably all of the others in this set because they're meant to be fun, I think, and disaster movies are a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine

Donnie Yen's Legend of the Fist
I had never heard of Donnie Yen until his turn as the blind assassin in the fourth installment of one of my favorite series; John Wick. From there, at that time I did still have my Peacock subscription, who had three movies in a series where he plays the title character called Ip Man; the story of the real-life Wing Chun master credited with training Bruce Lee. But there are four Ip Man movies in the series (insert another eyeroll here at Peacock). I absolutely loved the first two movies, and I really liked the third one that even had Mike Tyson in a small role as a local gangster. I first found out about the Ip Man movies because the set of four was on sale for $20. But I had never heard of it, and when I clicked on the link to the movie in the store, I saw that it was available on Peacock. So I decided to watch them there first to see if I even liked them. Then after I watched the first three and went back to the store, the set of four was no longer on sale and was instead $30. Considering that I saw it first on sale, I assumed it would be on sale again soon. Like with The Office, I checked almost daily. And unlike that fateful day about a week ago, Ip Man never did go back on sale. I waited for a good 10 months before I said fuck it and just paid the $30 (although I was NOT happy about it!). But it was bugging me that I hadn't seen the fourth one yet. But recently, the down side of my online store deal finding ass came back to bite me. Because I've learned to be patient as having an idea of what's going to go on sale, the flip side is when I see a set that I paid more for get deeply discounted. After purchasing a movie, series or boxset on my online store, if I click on it in the store I can never see the current price. Where the price would be is replaced with the word "purchased". This is probably best for me, because I often get to cussing when I see something much cheaper than I paid. About six days ago as of the writing of this part, I was perusing my online store as I often do and promptly started cussing in my home. Would y'all look at this shit in the top left under Limited Time Prices

Fucking hate when that happens. After I bought it, I watched the first three again before finally getting to the fourth. I have no regrets about buying that set because I watched all four of them immediately after I got it. The ones that drive me crazy are the ones I haven't seen yet, because I could have just waited since I haven't watched it anyway. While the Ip Man set never went on sale again at the time when I bought it, they did have a box set of like four or five Donnie Yen action movies for $20. That's where I found this one and I have a theory on this. Whenever a martial artist makes a movie with Legend in the title, that shit is always some classic ass shit. Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and probably a couple of other Lee's I can't think of right now have proven this formula. I'll get to the other ones in this set when I get to em, but I'ma make a point to get to the legendary shit sooner
The Meg and though I don't own it yet, I plan to buy Meg 2 and watch it as well

Smh at myself for taking me so long to watch a Christopher Nolan movie that I already own

El Mariachi and Once Upon a Time in Mexico
This is part of a trilogy that also cost me $10. I've seen what turns out to be the second movie in the series called Desperado. I LOVED Desperado. You know IMDB and the internet being in everyone's pocket hadn't been invented in the 90's when this series started. So I don't think I even knew about these other two movies until it was available in this set, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger

Open Water 2: Adrift and Open Water 3: Cage Dive
Alright so back when I was podcasting, I recorded a podcast on the first movie of this trilogy as HANDS DOWN, the scariest movie I've ever seen in my life

This is another one I didn't know had sequels until this trilogy was also available for $10. I should have been gotten to these, but I don't think I have much hope they'll be any good in the back of my mind

Planet of the Apes (Mark Wahlberg remake)
I hadn't watched a single Apes movie, although I had always heard glowing reviews. But last year while I still had Peacock, they had all three of these new remakes of the Andy Serkis led franchise. One day, I decided to press play on my first Planet of the Apes movie ever, Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It was REALLY good!! Over the next couple of days, I would watch the sequels, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. While I really enjoyed all three, my favorite was Dawn because I found the Civil War going on among them very intriguing. Then when the trailer for the next film in this franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was released, the online store put all three of the previous movies, and this Tim Burton remake from the turn of the century, into one box set and sold it for $20. I finally bought Kingdom when it went on sale for $13. But I still have yet to watch this one. I also want to go back and watch the old movies from the 60's and 70's

Superfly (the original 70's movie)
This was a situation where back in 2018, I briefly dated this lady who organized one of our dates to a drive-in to watch the Superfly remake. While we didn't even see the ending (we were busy doing other shit, if you know what I mean), I did really like the parts that we did see. Back then I had my little bootleg "hacked" Fire Stick, so I was able to watch it in its unterrupted entirety on Kodi when it came on video. Much like The Office and Ip Man movies, I began checking regularly for the remake too, but for reasons unknown it was always $15. Yeah, I liked the movie, but I didn't like it that damn much. Until recently, like in the past two weeks, I checked and it was on sale for $5. And so was the original, so I bought both but still haven't seen the original yet

The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and 2001: A Space Odyssey
I bought this Kubrick box set for $15, as it came with three movies of his that are classics that I haven't seen. I honestly didn't know 2001: A Space Odyssey is a movie from the 60's. As a big movie buff, I'm almost embarrassed to admit I haven't seen these. I need to really get on my shit

The first The Strangers movie caught me by surprise. It became one of my favorite horror movies. This is another one I didn't know had a sequel until I got the set. Typically on the online store I use, when a new remake or a sequel is about to come out, the original movies boxset goes on sale. So I got these two set for something like $8. Then this year, The Strangers: Chapter 1 (which has to be a prequel, right?) came out, followed by The Strangers: Chapter 2 next year. I'll check those out eventually, but this one may be another one I'm afraid will probably suck ass compared to its original

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 remake)
Just like with the Kubrick movies, I'm embarrassed to admit I just watched the original TCM for the first time around Halloween 2023, on one of these streaming services. I liked it so much that I bought it and watched it again, as most horror movies go on sale for $5 in October every year for obvious reasons. Then I started wanting to watch all things TCM, which includes a slew of movies, all of which were also on sale for $5. I bought the original, this remake, and another one called Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. I watched the original and the latter movie but still haven't seen this remake yet

This movie is always sold with No Country for Old Men as a boxset. I had heard so much about these movies and had never seen either of them. So when it was on sale for $10 for the two film set, I jumped on it. But I've only watched No Country for Old Men and haven't gotten to this one yet for whatever reason

Wasn't really interested in seeing this origin story in theaters. Said I'd wait until I could stream it at home. Then it went on sale for $12 and I was like BET. When I was in treatment, me and one of my roommates watched a new movie origin story at that time recently released on Disney+ called Lightyear, and we both loved it. But it wasn't anything I regretted missing in the theater. I'm hoping this one is a similar experience

The Transporter and The Transporter 2
In a Jason Statham box set that came with a few of his other movies as well. But I'm not really interested in those as much as I am into these two. I've heard a lot about them as well, although I still feel Jason Statham plays every role exactly the same way

The Twilight Movies
Yep, another one I bought because I got five movies for $20. I know I'm not the demographic for these movies (probably why I haven't watched them yet), but at $4 a pop it ain't like it broke the bank for me to check em out

Yeah, the Jordan Peele movie. All three of his movies came in a set for $15 too. I had already seen Get Out and Nope, but never saw this movie. To be fair, I did start watching it this past October. I got about halfway through it and stopped because I couldn't get into it. Why the fuck is this girl going to a random ass spot on the beach? Like, who the fuck does that? Smh. I'll finish it though just to say that I did. And who knows, maybe the rest of it will grab me

The Original Walking Tall Series
About 20 years ago, The Rock did a movie that I really enjoyed that not a lot of other people did called Walking Tall. I didn't know it at the time, but his movie was actually a remake. There were three of them made in the 70's and, of course, those three movies were in a box set on sale for $10. Those movies are much better reviewed than The Rock's version, so I'm looking forward to getting into these
