Disney's Encanto

Encanto Cover Poster
Have You Seen This Damn Movie?

No one who knows me and has seen this film will be surprised to hear that this is one of my top three favorite movies of. all. time! (along with Inception and The first Matrix, if you're wondering....and yes, I thoroughly enjoyed Resurrections)

Since this Spiritt Garrett website is my new outlet to put whatever the fuck I want here, I would like to review and share my thoughts on this fantastic film in full below

If you haven't seen the movie, first of all why the fuck did you click on this link? But no worries. It's available on Disney+ and I recommend aborting this page now until you watch the movie

Lots of spoilers below. You've been warned!

Encanto Family Magic

To be honest I had no idea what to expect....

You really don't know how much something is going to impact you until you click play. I didn't know what Encanto was and not only had I never heard of it, I hadn't seen a single advertisement for it before I watched it

But being home most days during this pandemic, and equipped with more streaming services than I have time to watch, I was perusing my Disney+ subscription for what was new at the time. I do this periodically with all of my streaming services just to see if anything tickles my fancy

I came across Encanto and read the synopsis, that said something along the lines of "Young Columbian girl discovers she may be the key to saving her family's magic". I thought to myself 'aww how adorable'. We already know Disney movies are notorious for containing magic. But the pictures looked like the animation would be fantastic on my 4K Television. And it's not like I had to pay anything extra to watch it. If I didn't like it I didn't have to finish it or watch it again. So I clicked play

About an hour and a half later as I wiped tears from my face, my life would be forever changed. I know that may sound pretty melodramatic, and I would agree. But for me this was much more than an entertaining flick

You call the movie Encanto. I call the movie validation

Encanto Mirabel Gifts
Encanto We Don't Talk About Bruno
Encanto Mirabel and Bruno

Before I Explain...Let's Recap

The film opens with a montage of Abuela's ole fake ass explaining to both Mirabel, her young granddaughter, and the audience the origin of the family magic and their encanto. The film does a great job explaining a lot in a short amount of time to get us quickly caught up to follow along

This happened to be the day that Mirabel was set to get her family magical gift. No one knows what gift each family member will receive, but like an heirloom the gift is passed down to each generation. We see Mirabel prepare to open her door and just before she does.....it fades to the title screen

I thought this was a nice move. Especially when we later find out what really happened at that moment. My high ass actually didn't think too much about it. I thought 'oh so the cute little grandbaby got her gift, I wonder what it is'. And that was about as much as I thought about it

We then see Mirabel wake up and get out of bed what looks like about 10 years later, get dressed and then walk out of her room...repeating to herself her daily mantra to start her day. Although I know it's an animated film I still couldn't help but think; I mean, this girl just woke up. She ain't gone wash her ass, or even run some mouth wash in her mouth for a minute or nothing, huh? Alright then ole nasty ass girl

On the way to set the table Mirabel is accosted by some nosey ass kids. We would learn this over time, but this happened to be the day Mirabel's little adorable cousin Antonio was set to get his gift. Since the family's magic powers the town as well, the family and the community are abuzz on this special day

So the pushy ass kids force Mirabel to explain her family heritage, which is actually meant for us. And here, just a few minutes into the movie we get our first song. I didn't know it was a musical, but I didn't find myself rolling my eyes as I normally do when music starts playing in a show. I don't fully know why but I have two theories; 1) Disney movies often have musical interludes, and 2) from the opening note I found my high ass grooving on my couch

But not only was it a great catchy song, it was most importantly educational for us. We learn the family tree and what each person in the family can do, as well as which family member is married to which. Then those pushy ass kids noticed something I didn't even notice. Mirabel never stated her gift. After trying to avoid the little fuckers to no avail....

It is eventually revealed by Mirabel's cousin Dolores that Mira is gift less. Fuck. That's messed up. And it explains a lot. But at this point I found myself more intrigued by where this movie was going, because I remembered the synopsis said that she figured out she was responsible for the family's magic. And then to not give her any magic at all - especially when she was always clearly in love with her family - was a helluva twist to me. How was she going to be the key to the magic if she didn't even have any?

Because she loves her family so much she never stopped trying to make her family proud. Even without a gift she still wanted to pull her own weight

In the opening song we also first hear the name "we do not speak"....Bruno. As the movie progresses we also learn more about the family. The family is all in 3's (intentional?). Abuela Alma and Pedro had triplets; Julieta, Pepa, and the aforementioned never to be mentioned Bruno. Bruno has no kids, but Julieta along with Agustin also have three; Isabela, Luisa, and Mirabel. Pepa and Felix have three as well; Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio, who we discover is an "animal guy", and despite his reservations after Mirabel's failed attempt, does get a gift in being able to communicate with animals

The rest of the family's gifts are as follows: Julieta can heal you with her food; Agustin married into the family and is "unceptional"; Pepa controls the weather with her emotions; Felix can dance his ass off and keeps a tight fro, but has no magic powers either; Bruno can predict the future with his visions; Dolores has super heightened hearing; Camilo shape shifts (his name comes from Chameleon, known for doing a variation of the same thing); Luisa has super strength; and Isabela can make flowers come out of her ass

We also discover that for reasons unknown the magic is dying. Mirabel will stop at nothing to save her family's magic and make her family proud. Isabela is set to be betrothed to my main man Mariano (did you see his two rhythmic ass intro walks?). But when her other sister Luisa starts losing her gift,  everything hits a little too close to home. And what's worse, Mariano is apparently only interested in Isabela for her magic. At least that's the way Abuela made it seem. So everything has to be "perfect"

We also eventually learn two important things; Bruno never actually left the premises, and not everyone in the family is as happy as they are leading on to be

My Thoughts

One of the reasons why even though I can watch this whenever I want on Disney+, I actually bought this movie. And ultimately why I decided to dedicate an entire fucking page on this site to this damn movie. AAAND why I will maintain this flick changed my life, is because I can personally relate to so many characters in this family. It was yet another reminder of something I learned a few years ago but continues to be proven true....I was never crazy

The character I would say I identify with the most is Luisa. But I could also feel Mirabel, Isabela, and bitch I was even Bruno in my family! It was like the film's creators listened to my episodes of the ConSPIRITTcy Theory podcast and made a movie about it. But I know better than that. What it really is, is proof of what I have been saying since those podcasts....I'm not alone. I started discovering that a few years ago and that realization has also only gotten more obvious since

Side note: Have y'all seen Madea's Homecoming on Netflix? I decided to give it a shot for the same reason I gave this movie a shot, but for one additional reason. It was rated R (or TV-MA, same shit). Tyler Perry movies were always preachy and rated PG-13. I was pleasantly surprised at the F bombs and weed references, and no one should be surprised that it is now my favorite Tyler Perry movie. The world is finally catching up to where I started realizing I was a few years ago. This is my time to shine

Anyway, back to Encanto. So here are my random thoughts:
The Characters

Abuela Alma

Ooooh I didn't like this bitch. Easily my least favorite character in the movie. While I see myself in many of these characters, I definitely see my own mother in Abuela. Maybe Abuela never got a fair shot from me because of this. But such is life ma'am, such is life. To her credit (and because it's a Disney movie) she did come to see the error of her ways by the end. But life isn't a Disney flick. Many reviews pointed out that Mirabel was the only one in the family without a magical gift, but I disagree. No one really seemed to notice that Abuela was just a blow-hard, and she too didn't have any gifts. Not one gift. The only thing that bitch did was buy the candle that turned into magic. And that is unconfirmed. She pissed me off in the scene at the breakfast table, when Antonio had told the pets to warm her seat for her, and this no magic having bitch says something like "we'll figure out how to put your powers to good use". Good use? Bitch you ain't even got no powers! How the hell are you going to tell him what's a good use for his shit? When I watch that scene, I instead choose to focus on Antonio's supportive father Felix, giving him the thumb up across the table. And when Mirabel tells her "I will never be good enough for you" BITCH I CLAP!

Mirabel

Of course she is one of my favorite characters. And not just because she's the star. You like Mirabel from the second the movie opens. My heart melts every time she wipes her hands on her dress out of nervousness before she fails to open the door to get a gift. You can tell she just cares and she cares a lot. She won't let the constant rejection get her down. I relate to her so much. We both wanted nothing more than to make our family proud of us, until we eventually realized no matter what we did that was never going to happen. Her going off on her abuela is probably my favorite scene in a movie of favorite scenes for me. "He loves this family, I love this family, you're the one that doesn't care, you're the one breaking our home....the miracle is dying because of you". Indeed Ms Mirabel Madrigal, indeed

Bruno

I had seen that my man John Leguizamo provided a voice in this flick, but by the time we're introduced to Bruno I actually forgot about it. I was so into this story and the music, that it wasn't until he uttered his first word that I said out loud in my home, "Oh shit, that's right....I forgot all about Leguizamo". But before that, when the rat gave him the last piece of his vision board and he started running while Mirabel gave chase, I said out loud "Is that Bruno?". How could you not love Bruno? I knew he was a character I was going to love when I heard the song We Don't Talk About Bruno. I thought to myself 'where the fuck would this guy get a seven-foot frame from, when we've seen both of his parents and his sisters at this point? Stop it'. In fact, he was shorter than his sisters. He was already likable but made even more so by the fact that he was wearing sandals. When was the last time you saw a bad ass in a movie wearing sandals? Can you imagine if John Wayne, Stallone, or the Governator had on flip flops to run through the city and fight bad guys? Or when was the last time a villain in a movie was a baddie in sandals? Okay maybe karate movies, but outside of that you don't see that do you? Anyway, I was happy my man Bruno got his love at the end after he too was about ready to go off on Abuela's ole fake ass. And his sisters' reaction to seeing him again always makes those fucking tears fall from my eyes smh

The Animals

Aye the animals in this movie were fucking hilarious! I can think of three examples of this off the fly:

  • The Parrot: Biiiiiiitch every single time that bird gives Mirabel that look after she swings across the hole in Bruno's tower, and stomps the edge of the cliff off in celebration....I scream. Still. And I've seen this movie no less than 30 times. That shit will never not be funny to me. It might have been colorful but that was a black ass bird if I've ever seen one. And were we not at one point referred to as coloreds? Think about it

  • The Donkeys: When Luisa begins her fantastic solo there are six donkeys standing behind Mirabel. First they look at her in unison after Luisa tosses the boulder up and crashes it on her head. Then after Luisa starts talking that shit, all the donkeys take a step back in unison, as if to say "get me the fuck away from this crazy shit". Prompting Mirabel to ask where they're going, and prompting me to lol every fucking time

  • I don't even know what that animal was: When Bruno is pouring salt or something on the ground creating a circle in Antonio's room to "have another vision", he notices this thing sitting there with a poker face chewing straw and shit. He just walks around it and continues conjuring up his vision. At one point what looks like a sand tornado is blasting around them. Bruno and Mirabel are holding hands because Bruno knew it was going to happen. The parrot had to grab something with his beak to keep from flying off. And that animal on the ground? Still in the same place with the same look on his face like ain't shit happening

Julieta

I'm not mad at her but I didn't particularly care for her either. She had some redeeming qualities. Like when she told her mother she had always been too hard on Mirabel. But I thought Mirabel asked her a very valid question about how she could have hurt her hand if it was all in her head. Not only did her own mother still not believe her (I don't give a damn about your intentions, I can tell you from experience that is one of the WORST feelings you can ever have), but she then even said that her brother "lost his way", and she doesn't want the same thing to happen to her. No ma'am. The only one lost here is you. Well you and yo damn mama

Agustin

Now Agustin on the other hand is the man. He shows his pride in his daughters every day with his attire. Wait, everyday he wears the same shit? Oh that whole family is nasty. The flower he wore was for Isabela. One sock had Luisa's symbols, while the other sock had Mirabel's embroidery. Regardless of their gifts or no gift he loved his three daughters the same. And he was YET ANOTHER person to stand up to Abuela, so you know I was a fan. "I was thinking of my daughter"

Luisa

Definitely the character I identify with the most. I actually thought Luisa was the oldest of the J/A love connection. But it does make sense as Isabela is the one who was set to marry. Where Mirabel and I are alike in that we tried in vain to make our family proud, Luisa and I have in common that feeling that is put on the strongest in a family. It is often the oldest (why I assumed she was), but it's ultimately the strongest. Because of that perceived strength, people think you don't have feelings. Like you don't need love. And like you are strong enough to handle EVERYTHING. Her solo is the one that got me the most because she got very real, and you would never have known any of that she revealed just by looking at her. Another thing we have in common

Isabela

I liked the initial dynamic between Isabela and Mirabel. It felt genuine. Every family it seems has that, particularly with siblings when there are more than two. While I didn't know her specific issue, I figured out Isabela was full of shit in that scene where she and her grandma are walking through the house, and use the word "perfect" about 32 times. Yeah I didn't know how it would come out, but I did know that they were both trying to convince themselves of something that is unattainable, regardless of how much magic you got. I don't blame Isabela though. I blame Abuela's fake ass. I could tell by how Abuela was so concerned about what everyone thought. Isabela didn't realize something I had already learned. Fake people always have to control the narrative because they are always so fucking concerned with what other people think of them. That's why they have to create a facade that everything is "perfect". Just as much as I loved the initial bickering between Isabela and Mirabel, I loved the reward in the scene where they come together, and Isabela realizes she can fly (metaphorically speaking of course). I wanted that kind of encouragement to grow from my own sister. But as I said life isn't a Disney movie. Still, I love that scene in this one. And that was after she had probably confessed for the first time out loud to someone, that she never wanted to marry Mariano

Pepa

She really didn't have a lot of scenes in the movie. Outside of We Don't Talk About Bruno, I can't think of too many scenes with her that weren't just a quick joke reference to her weather phenomena. But I also can't think of any scenes she was in that I didn't like her, or I thought the film could have done without. So I guess she was just....there. As a respected part of the family, but not someone I would call a memorable character for me in the movie

Felix

In addition to the infamous thumb up already mentioned, did you notice that in most of his scenes Felix had some sort of smile on his face? And that was exactly how you viewed his character. As someone who just always saw the best in the things no matter how fucked up they may be. You can see why Pepa loves him and how he helps keep her storms under control. He reminds me of a couple uncles on my dad's side by marriage. But my favorite was right before We Don't Talk About Bruno, as Mirabel is grilling her aunt about her uncle, Felix bursts in to the room...."IT WAS A NIGHTMARE!"

Antonio

This little guy just melted my heart from the moment we found out he was hiding under the bed. Keeping with the film being good at getting us caught up quickly in scenes, it took only one scene to realize just how close Mirabel and Antonio are. When he tells her "I wish you could have a door", I believe him. It was killing him just as much as it was her that she didn't have a gift. And he was genuinely concerned because he already knew Mirabel was awesome. And if she didn't get a gift, why would he think he would? When he extends his hand and tells her "I need you", who the fuck is not going out there to take that boy's hand?

Dolores and Camilo

I'm grouping them together because combined they still didn't have as much screen time as the other members of the family. This film was mostly about their three cousins so, like their mom Pepa, they're respected members of the family. But I didn't really have any memorable scenes with them front and center

Casita

Bruh can I order one of these on Amazon? This house was amazing. It was better than Alexa. It did everything from support the family's everyday living, to even saving them from serious injury. And I loved how casita had Mirabel's back when her dad walked in and saw Bruno's vision, by trying to scoot behind her lol

Mariano

Sooo I've got a confession to make. Y'all know I don't speak Spanish for shit right? So when Mariano does his first rhythmic strut toward the house, I legit thought Abuela was saying "OJ Mariano's on his way". I always wondered why they called him Mariano instead of OJ. It wasn't until I bought the movie and watched the version with the lyrics on the screen that is offered, that I found out she was actually saying "Oyé Mariano's on his way", and Oyé (pronounced more like OJ, as Abuela did in the film) means 'Hey' in Spanish. Well that was embarrassing

My Theory

Okay so hear me out. You know how in Bruno's vision we see the key is for Mirabel to hug Isabela to save the magic, right? But Bruno's vision wasn't complete. He said it was like her fate was undecided. Also in this vision was something he hadn't noticed before; a butterfly

Take a closer look when you next watch this scene. You'll notice that initially, only Bruno could see the vision and ultimately the hug; "am I fighting or hugging?". Then when Isabela is revealed, it's actually Mirabel who shouts her sister's name. And by the time she could see her sister, the embrace had been long done. I'm not convinced Isabela was the same person that hugged Mirabel in the vision

Then Mirabel sets out to hug her sister and that freed Isabela from the Matrix. We did see the candle burn brighter when they hugged, which would appear to make Bruno's vision correct

But immediately after Isabela is freed, Mirabel and Abuela get into it. Shortly after that the casita crumbles and the candle dies out completely. But wait, I thought hugging Isabela was supposed to save the magic

Abuela and Mirabel have a heart to heart, and after Abuela realizes she was the el problemo, Mirabel doesn't even respond until she first spots the butterfly from the vision. And what's the first thing she tells her abuela? "I can finally see"

They then hug it out in the water. As soon as they hug they are surrounded by a swarm of those same butterflies. Shortly after that they arrive home and put the house back together. Mirabel installs the doorknob and the magic is restored with her touch, just as the opposite had happened when she was younger

So my theory is that Bruno's vision, while close, was incorrect. It wasn't Isabela that Mirabel needed to hug to save the magic

It was Abuela
Last But Not Least....The Songs

I can't believe I'm typing these words, but I honestly liked every single song in this movie. I don't know if I've ever said that about a musical before. Every last song is a hit musically and lyrically, and my standards when it comes to music are pretty damn high my friend

The Family Madrigal

Playful from the opening note. Along with the beautiful graphics of the film throughout the song, you found yourself feeling as playful as the song itself. As you listen to it, you're engaged as you follow along to who everyone is, but it's in such a catchy way that you almost found yourself thanking the filmmakers for introducing everything like this

Favorite Lines:

"I never meant this to get autobiographical...."

"My Tio Bruno.....we don't talk about Bruno"

Waiting On A Miracle

On the extra features on iTunes, Lin-Manuel Miranda (from Hamilton fame, writer of all of the songs in this movie) talked about this song having to be on the level of the many great heroine solos of the Disney movie vault. I hadn't thought about that but there are many classics. When he said that it clicked. That was what I felt from this song as I watched it, up to and including the explosive rooftop fireworks display. It was heartfelt and Stephanie Beatriz (the singing and acting voice of Mirabel) really killed it. Especially since the filmmakers said she recorded this song two days before giving birth

Favorite Lines:

"Always walking alone, always wanting for more, like I'm still at that door longing to shine like all of you shine"

"All I need is a change, all I need is a chance, all I know is I can't stay on the side, open your eyes, open your eyes, open your eyes"

"I am ready. Come on I'm ready. I've been patient and steadfast and steady"

"I'm sick of waiting on a miracle"

"Can't keep down the unspoken, invisible pain....always waiting on a miracle"

Surface Pressure

Ohh definitely my favorite song in the movie. Not only do I relate to this song the most of any song in the movie, I really feel like Jessica Darrow (the singing and acting voice of Luisa) really owned this performance. Like Mirabel's solo, both songs start off with the subject trying to convince themselves that what they are feeling isn't real. Duuude, haven't we all been there? Also in both songs, the performances are at their best when the character is at their most vulnerable and honest. It is only then that you are able to discover your true potential

Favorite Lines (and I'm going to TRY not to quote this whole got damn song):

"What breaks the camels back it's....pressure like a drip drip drip that'll never stop"

"(Under the surface) Was Hercules ever like yo I don't wanna fight Cerberus?"

"Who am I if I can't carry it all?"

"(Under the surface) I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service" (that's that bullshit that family leads you to think, ultimately holding you back from your full potential. Saying it out loud takes away that power)

"Give it to your sister your sister's older, give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder"

"(Under the surface) I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?"

And the absolute bar of the song to me: "Give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure woulda pulled you under"

We Don't Talk About Bruno

Only the second Disney song to top the Billboard 100 and with good reason. This damn song stays in your head on repeat for no less than 24 hours the first time you hear it. This is where we discover that not only can Felix dance, he can sing too. I wonder what he does for a living. He probably sells insurance or some shit. But can we just jump right to my favorite highlight of the song? My man Mariano's not one, but TWO rhythmic ass walk intros. My man was on some Superfly shit. And what was crazier was his mom and Abuela were all in perfect step with him. That shit should have hit the top of the Billboards for that moment alone!

Favorite lines:

"Isabela your boyfriend's here!" (because I know to look at the screen....haha get it Mariano!)

"We don't talk about Bruno no no no, we don't talk about Bruno"

"I associate him with the sound of falling sand....tsh tsh tsh"

"He told me I'd grow a gut, and just like he said" (because this dude was a dick to Mirabel in the beginning about her not having any magic. That's what you get, asshole)

What Else Can I Do?

Isabela's coming out party of sorts, it actually makes sense that it took a cactus in her perfect world to show her that her world wasn't so perfect after all. And that started the flood cacti, if you will. This song always brings a smile to my face. Since I identify so well with both Isabela and Mirabel, it also stands to reason that I can completely identify with this perfect Disney type solution. I know it doesn't happen like this in real life. And maybe that's why I love it in the movie so much

Favorite Lines:

"I'm so sick of pretty I want something true, don't you?"

"What can you do when you know who you wanna be isn't perfect, but I'll still be okay?"

"What else can I do" (Just the title in itself is so empowering)

"What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect, it just needed to be and they let me be?"

"Show them what you can do......there's nothing you can't do"

Dos Oruguitas

Although the song is not in English, you can see what's happening in the movie and that this is a crucial part of the story. And in keeping with all of the solo numbers in this film, this performance feels vulnerable as well. It's a beautiful song, even without knowing what is said. I liked Pedro. But I still don't like Abuela Alma's ass

Favorite Line:

Bitch you know iono wtf they saying. Until....

Two Oruguitas

IIIII had no idea that this song was included in English later on the soundtrack until recently. I had never made it that far in the soundtrack, assuming the rest was just music from the movie (the score of the soundtrack). I think I was washing dishes one day while listening to this soundtrack, and my hands were wet where I would normally turn it off. So I just let it play. I wondered why the music for this song started again but didn't think anything about it....until I could understand what the fuck he was saying! I still don't know wtf an oruguita is tho

Favorite Lines:

"Their hunger burning, to navigate a world, that turns, and never stops turning"

"Two Oruguitas, against the weather, the wind grows colder, but they're together, they hold each other, no way of knowing, they're all they have for shelter...."

"Ay Oruguitas, don't you hold on too tight, both of you know, it's your time to grow, to fall apart, to reunite..."

"And so afraid of change, in a world that never stops changing, so let the walls come down, the world will never stop changing"

Columbia, Mi Encanto

This one I had forgotten about too, because it also comes after All of You, which is where I normally end my soundtrack listening. And this song played twice in the movie smh (at the beginning of Antonio's big night and the closing credits). This one's completely in Spanish as well and there is no English version (I checked!). But my ass was grooving on my couch during this entire song. And on the iTunes extras I found out the gentleman who sings this song is a legendary singer in Spanish music. I've only heard this one song from him but I can totally see why

All of You

Maaaan this goddamn tear-jerker right here. It has so many parts that overwhelm me. I already talked about Julieta and Pepa's reaction to seeing Bruno. Even Abuela apologized for her controlling ass ways. The town coming to their aid is a favorite too. Since the family's magic powered the community, it felt like the community was among those who may have taken the family for granted not realizing everything they were carrying. There was even a scene when a guy came in the casita, and told Abuela that people were getting anxious about the magic and wanted to speak with her. It just added more pressure to a family that was already cracking under it. For the community to see that is always one of my favorite moments. But the end (sigh), the very end of this song. Dude when Antonio takes Mirabel's arm to walk her to the door the same as she had done for him earlier, gets me every fucking time! My overgrown ass is sitting here with tears streaming down my face like these are real people. And I don't give a shit

Favorite Lines:

"But the stars don't shine they burn, and the constellations shift, I think it's time you learn, you're more than just your gift"

"The miracle is not, some magic that you've got, the miracle is you, not some gift just you. The miracle is you"

"Yeah, there's a lot to say about Bruno. I'll start, ok Pepa I'm sorry about your wedding didn't mean to be upsetting, that wasn't a prophecy I could just see you were sweating, and I wanted you to know that your bro loves you so, let it in let out, let it rain let it snow, let it gooooooo"

"Lay down your load, lay down your load, we're only down the road, we're only down the road, we have no gifts but we are many and we'll do anything for you"

"It's a dream when we work as a team, you're so strong.....yeah but sometimes I cry.....so do I"

"Would you watch our little girl go.....she takes after you"

"We see how bright you burn.....we see how brave you've been.....now see yourself in the turn.....you're the real gift kid, let us in"

"Open your eyes....what do you see....I see, me.....all of me"
